What is something you’ve done while working here that you’re most proud of?

I was really excited with an HDU sign not too long ago. At that time we were having an issue getting a painter in here, so I painted it. Tim did the base coat, but I did everything else. I did the gloss white, the gloss red, the glose black. Scuffed it, buffed it, redid it all. That one was fun because I’ve never gotten to paint a sign from start to finish, and I didn’t do that bad of a job. I never thought I’d get to do that--let alone do it and not screw it up.

What has challenged you the most while working here?

Kind of two things. Shipping for starters. We can figure out how to construct a sign any day, any way. But the logistics of getting it there can be tough. You can’t just think “I can make it.” You have to think of the end first, how it’s going to transport safely and properly. I would also say our boss, Tim, challenges me because he always comes up with new things he thinks up for us to do. He’s always challenging us to try something new.

What have you enjoyed most about working here?

I would say the consistency and flexibility of the job. Yes it is a 9-5 job, but Tim is always flexible. He knows we’re human. He knows some of us have long commutes, so sometimes I’m a bit late, and he’s not waiting at the door saying “where were you?” He understands if you have to leave early for an appointment or something else important. He understands that sometimes things come up. He gets that we’re human, so we have other things going on outside of the shop.

Why should someone work here?

I would say “why not?” There are so many things you can do here. We’ve had it where someone started out in sales and learned it wasn’t his best fit. He ended up becoming the shipping manager. Just because you’re hired for one role, doesn’t mean you’re stuck in it. We have so many other possible roles, so we’ll try to find a fit for you. We want to keep you employed. We want you to succeed. A desk is not right for everybody. They might be better in the warehouse. Or vice versa. You may not be great at laying vinyl, but maybe you can print and laminate it. Do you want an opportunity to learn a new trade? That’s the biggest thing. Also, a sign’s an essential thing in the world. You’ll always have job security. So why not try something new? Why not learn a new trade? Why not work for a great company?

What is something you've learned while working here?

I learn something new every day. That’s why I come back, because it’s something different every day.

How have you measured your success here?

When I first started working here, I was lucky to put 30k in sales on the board. Because of the product knowledge I’ve learned and the training I was given, I doubled my revenue within a year. Every year since then, my revenue has gone up. I measure my success based on how well I do compared to the previous year. Always try to do better than you did the day before. You’re never in competition with anyone but yourself.

What advice would you give a new employee?

Be ready to learn and be ready to apply what you’ve learned.

What have you enjoyed most about working here?

I enjoy everything, especially the people that are here. I like coming here because, as a person, I feel like it serves my greater purpose. I feel like I am a good fit and that the company is a good fit for me. I feel like I am good at what I do, and I have the support to be able to not only maintain that but also to allow me to grow and become better. If I become better, the company will become better.

Why should someone work here?

We have a great crew. We are secure; we aren’t going anywhere. It’s a great place for someone looking to invest their time longterm in a company. We’ve been here a while and will continue to be here for a while. The people are what makes coming to work here a joy, that’s the biggest draw. Also, the owner is actively involved. In a lot of places, you don’t see that. The owner is willing to work with his employees in terms of flexible schedules and things that an employee might need personally. At a bigger company they would just be considered part of the collective where everybody has the same rules and has to do the same thing. Whereas if you are employed here, you get more personalized treatment.

How have you measure your success here?

I measure it by the happiness of my customers and their gratitude when seeing their completed sign projects.

What advice would you give a new employee?

Take in as much information as you can about the materials and different options for signs. Because ultimately the sign business is knowing the materials and what you can do with those materials.

What is something you’ve done while working here you’re proud of?

For me, it's helping someone who has no idea what they want end up with a great sign for less money than they planned on spending.

What have you enjoyed most about working here?

Getting to know my coworkers, completing orders, and using teamwork to make things happen. Making signs are great but at the end of the day you need to enjoy the people you’re working around.

Why should someone work here?

Because it’s a good atmosphere. It’s very laid back, but you’re still doing good, professional work at the end of the day.
